La Quijotita y su prima

Following the massive success of El periquillo sarniento, José Joaquín Fernández de Lizardi ("El Pensador Mexicano") published _La Quijotita y su prima. Historia muy cierta con apariencia de novela_ (1818–1819). Written during the tense pre-independence period of Mexico, this didactic novel contrasts the upbringing and fates of two cousins: Pudenciana, raised under rational, Enlightenment-inspired principles by her parents, and Pomposa (dubbed "Quijotita"), whose superficial education and unregulated romantic readings lead her down a path of vanity, economic ruin, and ultimate tragedy.

Lizardi masterfully adapts the Cervantine model of "quixotism" to female education, illustrating the urgent need to reform traditional societal structures and equip women with practical skills and rational thinking. Through rich interpolated stories, sharp social satire, and vibrant archetypes, the novel serves as an invaluable sociological window into the nascent Mexican bourgeoisie and the ideological shifts of the early 19th century.
