El sueño de la razón is a magnificent example of Antonio Buero Vallejo’s «posibilismo», his strategy for conveying strong public denunciations while eluding censorship. The play centers on the painter Francisco de Goya during the oppressive reign of Ferdinand VII (1823).

Using innovative "immersion effects," Buero forces the audience to experience Goya's deafness and his internal demons. The "Black Paintings" are integral to the stage design, symbolizing the horror of a society where reason sleeps.
