Fausto

By Estanislao del Campo

"Reading *Fausto* today is as fun as it was almost one hundred and forty years ago... integrating the tryptych of gauchesca poetry par excellence alongside *Martín Fierro* and *Santos Vega*."

Estanislao del Campo's *Fausto* is a rigorously gauchesca piece where the vocabulary and the nature of the metaphors carry the most carefree and "zumbón" (playful) criollo tone.

The story goes that Del Campo, during a performance of Gounod's opera *Faust* at the old Teatro Colón, improvised gaucho-style comments to his friend Ricardo Gutiérrez. The humor of the work resides in the fact that the gaucho, Anastasio "El Pollo," recounts the opera through his rural worldview, translating the medieval drama into the graphic validity of pastoral life. Seeing the audience as "hacienda amontonada" (herded cattle), the corrosive humor dissolves the exotic and high-culture theme.
