En la ardiente oscuridad (1950) is Antonio Buero Vallejo's first major success and a cornerstone of post-war Spanish theater. Set in an institution for the blind, the play uses physical blindness as a metaphor for the human condition and the willful ignorance of society.

The conflict between Ignacio, the tragic visionary who refuses to accept a false happiness, and Carlos, the defender of order and institutional rules, reflects the tension between individual truth and social conformity. This edition includes a foreword by renowned playwright Carlos Gorostiza.
