El áncora y otras novelas cortas

By Emilia Pardo Bazán

"The Spanish short novel is a great unknown of one of the most exciting movements in Hispanic literature. Despite being the prelude to one of the most brilliant eras, if not the most, of the Spanish short story, it has received little attention until now."
— Borja Rodríguez Gutiérrez, from the introduction to *Trece cuentos del romanticismo español*

Emilia Pardo Bazán (1851-1921), a towering figure in late 19th and early 20th-century Spanish literature, was not only a celebrated novelist but also a prolific writer of short novels, a genre largely overlooked by critics. This volume compiles four of her notable short novels, including "El áncora," "La dama joven," "Bucólica," and "La gota de sangre," showcasing her versatility and profound insight into the human condition.

"El áncora" delves into the superficial education and marital struggles of Fernanda, an aristocrat navigating infidelity and societal expectations, ultimately finding purpose in motherhood. "La dama joven" follows the aspirations of Concha, a seamstress dreaming of a theatrical career, only to be thwarted by societal norms and her fiancé's traditional views. "Bucólica" contrasts a degenerated rural Galicia with Madrid, revealing the decay of an aristocracy and the hypocrisy of social conventions through an epistolary narrative. Finally, "La gota de sangre" presents a unique detective story where intuition guides the protagonist, Selva, through a murder mystery, challenging genre conventions.

These narratives offer a microcosm of contemporary Spanish life, exploring themes of female agency, social criticism, the constraints of marriage, and the double standards of morality. Pardo Bazán, a tireless advocate for women's education and independence, uses these stories to expose the societal barriers limiting women's freedom, solidifying her legacy as a pioneering feminist and realist author.
